Trend chart is a progress and performance reporting tool. It provides a visual representation of how well a project, an item of work, or work task is performing. The trend chart shows planned data and actual data over time.

Review and evaluate these charts based on whether the quantity of work completed to date is ahead or behind the plan at any given time, and what could be done to get back on track if the work is behind. This is a measure of quantity variance.

Quantity variance is the difference between the planned cumulative line and the actual cumulative line at any given time.

In addition, analyze the charts as applicable based on how many days, weeks, or months that the project is behind or ahead. This is a measure of time variance.

Time variance is calculated from the vertical line a any given time but measures the difference along the horizontal line touching both cumulative lines.
